Raw Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

We recently started offering Raw Organic Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. Nick has been taking it to shows, and the number one question asked is, "What do I do with it?"

So, here are 10 things that we do with coconut oil:

1. Cook with it. Coconut oil is an excellent oil for stir-frying, as it withstands heat much better than other oils.

2. Bake with it. We use it in recipes calling for oil, shortening, or butter. We also season our cast iron pans with it. We condition our wooden cutting boards with it, too.

3. Put it on popcorn instead of butter. Sometimes, Nick mixes it with some raw honey, stirs it into the popcorn, and sprinkles it with sea salt. So delicious!

4. Add it to our morning smoothies for a caffeine-free energy boost!

5. Use it to grease the pans when baking.

6. Use it as a moisturizer. It absorbs very quickly and leaves the skin feeling so soft. I use it after a shower*, and I use it as a facial moisturizer, both in the morning before applying makeup, and before bed. It’s gentle on the delicate skin around the eyes and it also moisturizes dry lips. It does a great job of removing makeup. I also rub it into my nails and cuticles.

7. Use it as a hair conditioner. I apply a few drops to my hand, rub my hands together, and massage into wet hair. Comb through, and style as normal. I’ve also massaged it through dry hair, left it on as long as possible, and then shampooed it out. I use it on my African American daughter's hair at night and cover with a sleep cap. I also use it on her during the day to moisturize and to smooth little stray hairs.

8. Apply it after shaving.

9. Apply it before going out in the sun.

10. Use it as a massage oil.

I've also made both a deodorant and a tooth soap using coconut oil. I'm still playing around with recipes and will share them once I'm completely happy with them!

Many people have the misconception that coconut oil is unhealthy because it's a saturated fat. However, not all saturated fats are the same. The fatty acids in coconut oil are predominantly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA), also known as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). MCFA do not have a negative effect on serum cholesterol, and they actually help protect people from heart disease!

Coconut oil is also said to help with weight loss by providing a feeling of fullness when taken before a meal and by helping to boost the metabolism.

Coconut oil aids in digestion and helps to improve the immune system.

Externally, coconut oil can help with skin rashes and acne, along with wound healing because of its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

Not all coconut oils are healthy. Some less expensive coconut oils are made from copra, which is coconut that has been dried by smoke or high heat. The copra is often handled using poor sanitary methods, resulting in bacterial contamination and mold in the coconut oil. So, the oil is then refined, bleached, and deodorized to purify it. These inferior oils often smell bad and sometimes have a smoky taste to them.

Our coconut oil is cold-pressed, never heated, and is completely raw. It's extra virgin and certified organic. The result is a delicious oil that's pure white in its solid state and clear in its liquid state.

Coconut oil should be stored at room temperature. It will remain solid at room temperature but will melt on a warm day when temperatures rise about 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Sometimes the oil will be in an in-between state, with some solids remaining in the liquid. This is perfectly acceptable, and the clumps will disappear if the room temperature continues to rise, or the oil will completely solidify if the temperature drops. It does not harm the oil at all when it changes from liquid to solid and back again!

I haven’t tried these uses yet, but here are some more!
Use instead of shaving cream.
Use a tiny bit on your underarms as a natural deodorant.
Add to your bathtub for a moisturizing soak
(try adding a drop of peppermint or other essential oil!).
Use to help prevent or reduce visibility of stretch marks.
Use on rough, cracked heals.
Take a spoonful to help with heartburn, acid reflux, or indigestion.
Use to help detox the body during a fast or cleanse.
Take a spoonful with daily vitamins to help improve absorption.
Apply to bee stings or bug bites to soothe and help heal the wound.
Apply regularly to the inside of nostrils if prone to nosebleeds.
Add a spoonful to dog’s or cat’s food.
Use as a metal polish, but always test a small area first.
Mix with a little bit of fresh lemon juice and use as a
furniture polish; always test a small area first!
Try using coconut oil to remove gum stuck in hair.
Use instead of WD-40.
Mix with baking soda for a non-toxic “Goo Gone”.

*For skin care, a nice complement to coconut oil are the Jen'der Handmade Soaps, which are made from coconut oil and coconut milk.

Kale vs. Chocolate?

We spent the past three days at Delaware Valley College's A-Days. We were set up in the gym...right next to a guy who was selling, of all things, fudge! So, of course, Nick was thinking that people weren't going to want to taste raw kale with all of that chocolate lurking just feet away.



Well, he was wrong! He put out samples of Brad's Leafy Kale and New York Naturals Kale Chips, and people loved them! He sometimes had to lure them away from the chocolate next door, and then he had to convince them to take that first taste. Some people were reluctant; others had no clue what kale even was!

So, for those who don't know a thing about kale, it is:

  • A dark, leafy green cruciferous vegetable
  • One of the healthiest, nutrient-rich vegetables around
  • An excellent source of calcium, especially since it lacks oxalic acid, found in most other greens, which blocks the absorption of calcium
  • High in Vitamins K, A, and C
  • A source of Manganese, a trace mineral which helps promote strong bones, healthy nerves, and which supports the thyroid gland
  • A source of carotenoids, especially lutein, which help prevent damage to the eyes from exposure to ultraviolet light
  • Thought to have both cancer-preventative benefits because of its antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Extremely low in calories

We love kale and we want to share that love! If you see us at a show, please stop by for a sample. People who initially turned up their noses at it, loved it enough that they brought their friends back to try it!
