More Uses for Coconut Oil: Hair and Body

Lavender Body Butter

1/3 cup coconut oil
2 Tbsp beeswax
5 drops lavender essential oil

Melt coconut oil and beeswax in the top of a double boiler.  If you don't have a double boiler, just use a heatproof bowl over top of a saucepan.

Remove from  heat and add lavender oil; cool completely.

In a mixer, whip the lotion.  Transfer to a jar or container with a tightly fitted lid.



Citrus Sugar Scrub

1 cup organic cane sugar
¼ cup coconut oil
¼ cup jojoba oil
30 drops citrus essential oils

If coconut oil is solid, gently melt it in the top of a double boiler.

Transfer to a small bowl and mix with cane sugar and jojoba oil.  Add essential oils.  You may use any combination of citrus essential oils: bergamot, bitter orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin, neroli, petitgrain, sweet orange, tangerine.

Mix well and store in an airtight jar.

Use to exfoliate skin twice a week.  To use, wash body and/or face.  Gently massage sugar scrub into skin.  Wash off with warm water.  Pat skin dry.  Moisturize with coconut oil.
   


Honey Coconut Oil Hand Scrub

1/4 cup organic cane sugar
1/4 cup sea salt
2 Tbsp raw honey
1 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
       
In a small bowl, mix together cane sugar, sea salt, and lemon juice.

In another small bowl, mix together honey and coconut oil.

Mix honey/coconut oil mixture into cane sugar/sea salt mixture.  Mix well; store in a tightly sealed container.

Twice a week, massage a small amount into clean hands.  Rinse with warm water; pat dry.  Moisturize with coconut oil



Dry Skin/Eczema Moisturizer


3/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup rolled oats
15 drops lavender essential oil
   
Grind rolled oats into a powder or flour in a blender or food processor.  Set aside.

In the top of a double boiler, melt coconut oil.  Remove from heat and stir in ground oats.  Mix well.

Stir in lavender essential oil.

Pour into a small container.  Set aside until completely cool, then put on lid.

Apply to eczema/dry skin as needed.




Coconut Oil Cream for Sore Joints and Muscles


1/2 cup coconut oil
2 tsp beeswax pellets
5 drops camphor essential oil
5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil

In the top of a double boiler, melt coconut oil and beeswax, stirring frequently.

Remove from heat and add camphor, eucalyptus, and peppermint essential oils.

Immediately pour into a glass container.  Cool completely, then cover with a lid.

Massage into sure joints and muscles.
   


Coconut Oil Deodorant

6 Tbsp coconut oil
1/4 cup arrowroot
1/4 cup baking soda
Essential oils
   

In a small bowl, mix arrowroot and baking soda with a fork. 

Add coconut oil, and continue to mix with fork until incorporated.

Add essential oils.

Place in a small glass jar.  Apply with fingertips as needed.


Note: If skin is irritated, try making this with 7 Tbsp arrowroot and 1 Tbsp baking soda, since baking soda can irritate some people's skin.



Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Apply coconut oil to dry hair, massaging in to hair and scalp.  Cover with a shower cap or saran wrap.  Leave on for 30 minutes.  Shampoo well, rinse, and repeat.


Frizzy Ends Leave-in Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

Before bed, massage a very small amount of coconut oil into the ends of your hair.  By morning, it should be absorbed and ends should be manageable.



Cold Sore Relief

1 Tbsp coconut oil
4 drops tea tree oil

Mix coconut oil and tea tree oil in a small glass jar.  Apply with a cotton swab to affected area as soon as symptoms occur.  Reapply four times daily.



Coconut Oil Foot Scrub

1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup organic cane sugar
3/4 - 1 cup coconut oil, melted
2 Tbsp raw honey
8 drops peppermint essential oil

In a medium-sized bowl, stir together Epsom salts and cane sugar.  Slowly stir in coconut oil, a little bit at a time, until mixture is smooth, and oil is incorporated.

Add honey; stir well.  Stir in peppermint essential oil.

Pour into a jar with a tight-fitting lid.

To use, soak feet in warm water.  One foot at a time, massage some of the foot scrub all over feet, especially on dry heels.

Return foot to the soak water and repeat with other foot.

Rinse, and moisturize with foot cream.



Coconut Oil Foot Cream

¾ cup coconut oil
½ cup shea butter
12 drops peppermint essential oil

Combine coconut oil and shea butter in the top of a double boiler.  Melt, stirring frequently. 

Remove from heat and stir in peppermint essential oil.

Store in a glass jar with a tightly-fitted lid.  May refrigerate to keep coconut oil solid.

Massage into feet, especially on dry heals.



Coconut Oil Vapor Rub

1/2 cup coconut oil
2 Tbsp beeswax pastilles
30 drops eucalyptus essential oil
20 drops peppermint essential oil
15 drops tea tree oil

Place coconut oil and beeswax in the top of a double boiler.  Melt, stirring frequently.

Remove from heat and stir in essential oils.

Immediately pour into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
