DIY Cleaning Products

White vinegar: Absorbs odors instead of just covering them up.  The vinegar smell disappears when the vinegar dries.  Also kills bacteria and mold.

Baking soda: Good for scouring sinks and tubs

Washing soda: Also good for scouring sinks, tubs, and tiles

Lemon juice: Acidic, and has some antiseptic properties

Liquid Glycerin Soap: I use Wash Tyme for general cleaning.

Borax (Sodium Borate): Deodorizes and disinfects

Essential oils: Peppermint, rosemary, thyme, sweet orange, lemon, and tea tree

To Disinfect Countertops:  I keep two spray bottles in my kitchen, one with white vinegar and one with hydrogen peroxide.  I spray the counters with the vinegar first, and then with the hydrogen peroxide.  I also use this on my cutting boards.  Never mix the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in the same bottle!  Another way to disinfect cutting boards is to just rub a slice of lemon across them.

General Spray Cleaner: I mix equal parts Wash Tyme Glycerin Soap and water in a spray bottle and use in the kitchen, bathroom,

Window Cleaner: Add 2 Tbsp. Wash Tyme Glycerin Soap to a spray bottle.  Fill with water; shake well.  Use on windows and mirrors.

For Grease: Mix 1/4 cup white vinegar and a couple of squirts of Wash Tyme Glycerin Soap with 2 cups of water.

Dishwasher Rinse Aid:  I fill the rinse agent compartment in my dishwasher with white vinegar.

Cleanser:  Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with enough Wash Tyme Glycerin Liquid Soap to make a thick paste.

Tub & Tile Spray:  Mix 3 Tbsp white vinegar, 1/2 tsp washing soda, 1 tsp borax, and 1/2 tsp Wash Tyme Liquid Soap with 2 cups of very hot water in a spray bottle.  Shake well, making sure that all ingredients are dissolved.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Pour in about a 1/4 cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar.  Let sit for a few minutes, then clean with a toilet brush.

Clogged Drains:  We often just pour boiling water down our drains when they're sluggish.  For more stubborn clogs, we put about a 1/2 cup of baking soda in the drain, then add a cup or so of white vinegar.  Wait about 15 minutes and then pour boiling water in the drain.

Furniture Polish:  Mix 2 tsp fresh lemon juice with 2 tsp olive oil.  Apply to furniture with a soft, cotton cloth.  Wipe furniture again with another clean, soft cloth to remove any excess oil.

Produce Spray:  Mix 1 Tbsp lemon juice and 1 Tbsp baking soda with a cup of water in a spray bottle.  Shake well.  Spray the produce with it, let sit for five minutes, and rinse well.

Produce Wash:  Fill a large bowl with cold water and add 2 Tbsp salt and 1/4 cup white vinegar.  Mix well, add produce, and let sit for about a half hour.  Rinse well.

New Clothes:  Add one or two cups of white vinegar to the washer to remove chemicals and new clothes odors.

Air Freshener Spray:  Mix 1/2 cup water, 1/4 cup vinegar, and 20 drops essential oil (I usually use grapefruit or some other citrus) in a spray bottle.

I use Wash Tyme Glycerin Soap for the dishwasher and laundry.  There are recipes for homemade versions out there, but I haven't tried them yet.  There are also recipes for homemade oven cleaner.  I haven't tried those, either, because I have a mental block about cleaning ovens.  I'd rather buy a new one.  Or move.  ;)
